In his 2025 book, The Avatar, Jonathan Cahn describes the "avatar" as a political leader or other prominent figure who unknowingly acts as an agent for ancient, demonic gods. Cahn's argument is that as Western societies have moved away from Christianity, they have become spiritual voids that these ancient entities, first detailed in his earlier book The Return of the Gods, have returned to fill.
